Summary

This free photo background changer lets you swap the backdrop of any photo that has a plain background. Upload an image, and the tool reads the backdrop colour from the edges, removes it, and replaces it with a solid colour, a gradient or transparency. Tolerance and edge softness sliders let you tune the cut, and the result downloads as a PNG. Everything runs in your browser, so your photo is never uploaded. It works best on contrasting, evenly lit backdrops.

Photo Background Changer: Swap a Plain Backdrop in Seconds

Upload a photo with a plain backdrop, pick a new colour, gradient or transparent background, and download the result. It runs in your browser, so the photo never leaves your device.

Swap the background of your photo

Start with the sample photo or upload your own. Move the tolerance slider until the backdrop disappears and the subject stays intact.

Everything runs in your browser: your photo is never uploaded. This tool reads the backdrop colour from the photo edges and swaps it out, so it works best on plain backgrounds with a clear colour gap to the subject. Busy backgrounds, or a light product on a light backdrop, need an AI spell. Exports are capped at 1600 px on the longest side.

How it works

What the tool does to your photo

It reads the backdrop from the edges

The tool samples every pixel along the border of your photo and takes the median colour of each channel. That colour is your backdrop. A single stray object near the edge will not skew it.

It fills inward from the border

Starting at the edges, it spreads across every connected pixel close to the backdrop colour. It also follows slow gradients, like a studio vignette. Gaps enclosed by the subject, such as a handle loop, are left alone.

Tolerance and softness do the tuning

Tolerance sets how far a colour can drift from the backdrop and still count as backdrop. Edge softness blurs the cut by 0 to 6 pixels, so the subject does not look pasted on.

Workflow

A clean swap in four moves

  1. 1

    Check the photo first

Plain paper, a wall or a lightbox works. If the backdrop has texture, objects or a busy pattern, stop here and use an AI spell instead.

  2. 2

    Set the tolerance

Start at 30. Raise it if backdrop patches remain at the corners. Lower it if the product starts to fade. Most studio shots land between 20 and 45.

  3. 3

    Pick the new background

Use white for marketplaces, a brand colour for your shop banner, a two-colour gradient for social posts, or transparent for a PNG cut-out.

  4. 4

Zoom in on the edges, then download

Look at the outline at 100 percent. A softness of 1 or 2 hides most jagged edges. In practice the whole pass takes under two minutes.

Where it works

Best on a contrasting, evenly lit backdrop

A white sneaker on sage green paper is close to ideal: the product and the backdrop sit far apart in colour, and the light is even. In our test of that photo, about 85 percent of pixels were identified as backdrop at the default setting, and the outline stayed clean. The shadow under the sole is the one part that tends to linger, and that is normal.

  • Works on plain paper, painted walls and lightbox shots
  • Handles gentle vignettes and uneven lighting
  • Struggles when the product colour matches the backdrop, like a white mug on grey
  • Cannot replace busy scenes, which need an AI spell

Common questions

Is this photo background changer free?
Yes. There is no signup, no watermark and no usage cap. The tool runs entirely in your browser, so the only limit is your device memory.
Does my photo get uploaded anywhere?
No. The photo is read by your browser, processed on a canvas and exported from there. Nothing is sent to a server, apart from an anonymous count that the tool was used.
Why did part of my product disappear?
Your product has a colour close to the backdrop, so the fill treated it as background. Lower the tolerance first. A white mug on grey paper is the classic hard case. If lowering the slider does not fix it, reshoot against a contrasting colour, or use an AI spell that detects the object itself.
Can it replace a busy background like a kitchen or a street?
No. Busy backgrounds have no single colour to read, and removing them needs a model that recognises the subject. That is a job for an AI spell such as Scene Shift, not a browser colour tool.
What background does Amazon require for main images?
Amazon asks for a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255) on main product images. Pick the white swatch, set the edge softness to 1 or 2, and zoom in on the edges before you upload. Marketplace rules change, so check the current guidelines.
How do I get a transparent PNG?
Choose Transparent (PNG) in the New background menu, then press Download PNG. The checkerboard behind the preview shows which areas are empty.
Why does the shadow under my product stay?
A shadow is darker than the backdrop, so it falls outside the tolerance. Raising the tolerance removes soft shadows but also eats into dark subjects. For product photos a faint shadow often reads as more natural than none.
What size is the exported image?
Photos up to 1600 px on the longest side keep their size. Larger photos are scaled down to 1600 px, with the same proportions. The size shows in the results panel before you download.
